In 2015 the Australian Shiatsu College celebrated its 30-year anniversary and a remarkable contribution to the history and development of Shiatsu in Australia.
The College first began training students in 1985 and has seen many graduates throughout its 38 years.
The Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies offered at the College was the first Shiatsu course in Australia to receive registration in 1996, which set the benchmark for future training packages.
As well as offering its Zen Shiatsu short course twice a year, the College has a strong community presence with weekly student clinics, venue hire space and a variety of classes available to the public. It also operates special clinics in partnership with the MIIND program to support people with mental illness.
The College itself has undergone many transformations, moving into bigger premises and its recent home in Brunswick. It took a dedicated team to transform the 115-year-old cotton mill into the beautifully renovated space we have loved over the past 15 years.
As part of the celebration year, the College was delighted to welcome Mr Ohashi, founder of the Ohashi Institute in the USA, for his first Australian teaching visit in April. A pioneer in holistic healthcare, Mr Ohashi was one of the first people to introduce the Western public to shiatsu.
The celebration evening was an opportunity to bring together the ASC community past and present to share in the rich history of the College and its contribution to shiatsu in Australia.
At the end of 2022, the college is moving into its next chapter. Leaving our dedicated college space, the ASC is embracing a blended delivery model of education to allow more flexibility for students. Our practical classes and student clinics will be delivered at the Learning Centre in Ceres, East Brunswick from 2023 onwards. We will also be expanding our Zen Shiatsu short course offering to the Augustine Centre in Hawthorn.
